What a year we had in 2011.
There where two extremes we saw in our industry in 2011-Auctioneers
either did very well or had the worst year ever.  For those who did well kudos, for those who did not it’s time to reevaluate your market, fees, advertising and how Buyers and Sellers see our services as a solution to their problems.

I have always found the end of the year is a good time to look back and reflect on the good and bad things my company accomplished.  It is not easy to be objective about the “bad things” with answers like “it wasn’t my fault” , “I wouldn’t do that job for that fee” or “ I didn’t want that assignment anyway”.  But you have to force yourself to look in the mirror and say “The only one who can fix this is me!  So lets get back to work!”  What I do personally is compare my work approach when I was doing well with my work approach when things are not so well.  What am I doing differently?  Am I reaching for deals I should pass on.  Is this Seller motivated?  Are there Buyers out there who believe that
the value of the item for sale is in the same ballpark as the Seller?  So at the end of every year we put together our business plan for the following year with revisions every quarter.  This forces me to preform.  Like all sales businesses it’s a matter of getting out there and asking for the business.
Don’t be shy-your competition isn’t!.
Another very important component of success is continued education.

CSAA & You.
Having been involved in our trade association for over 10 years I have found that by attending the Annual Convention, Spring Conference and our Legislation Day in Sacramento has taught me the importance of continuing education.  This last year alone the CSAA had featured speakers in real estate, charity auctions, estate and personal property auctions as well as car auctions.  We had at length discussions about the impact of online vs. live auctions.  We had speakers review and discuss technology trends and implementation.  And best of all we had made time to sit down with fellow auctioneers from not only around the State but auctioneers from around the country to discuss deal stories of what worked and what did not work.   And now we use these new friendships to help us succeed in our everyday business.

2012 Challenge- We are here to help.  But we also need your help.  Contact JJ our administration director and ask what subcommittee you can participate.

Regardless
of what you think about President Kennedy or even the moon walk, the statement
– the vision – was an incredible and bold goal.
The U.S. had not been a leader in the “race for space.”  But when that ambitious goal of “landing a
man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth” was announced, it
galvanized the United States in ways that previously only war had accomplished.

President
Kennedy started with an examination of “where we are strong and where we are
not” and noted that “I believe we possess all the resources and talents
necessary.”

Less than
10 years later, Apollo 11 landed on the moon and Neil Armstrong stepped
out.  I remember that night –
vividly.  I remember looking up and
seeing the moon as I never had before.

What that
mission proved is that with a clearly articulated vision and the necessary
resources appropriated to do the job, we can accomplish big changes.  From that “race to space,” we now have things
like microwaves, computers and of course, Tang (do they still make that?)!

Fast
forward to the summer of 2010 when Mark Rogers, President of the NAA Board of Directors
announced in Greensboro, NC that he appointed the Council on Future Practices
to assess the future of the auction industry and identify the changes on the
horizon for this important industry.

In less
than a year, the Council accepted their challenge, researched issues and
proposed recommendations.  Their paper,
“Give me Five, Now Ten…Years Into the Future” can be found on auctioneers.org
and will be distributed to all NAA members with the June/July issue of
Auctioneer.  At their spring meeting, the
NAA Board of Directors unanimously endorsed the “spirit” of the paper and
directed the Executive Committee to develop a plan to address the proposals.

Again,
regardless of what you think about these individuals or even about their
recommendations, the work they have accomplished is important.  They have looked at the changes that are
happening in society and in the auction industry (and they are happening) and
they believe that NAA must be transformed so that the organization can continue
to offer programs and services to auction professionals for another 77 years.

We don’t
know what those changes will be.  But we
do know that we have accessed our organization – we know where we are strong
and where we are not.  We have
strengthened our financial resources.
And after being here three years, I know we possess the human resources
and talents necessary to make these changes.
We have incredibly bright members, people who are passionate about this
industry and are willing to make the investments necessary to keep it strong.

In the next
few months, you’ll be asked for your feedback on various proposals.  Please be generous with your thoughts.  Disagree if you believe it necessary.  That’s okay.
But please also know that there is NO hidden agenda from anyone
involved.  We do NOT have the answers
figured out.  We’ll distribute different
proposals to see which one fits the best.

Then like
they did nearly 50 years ago, we’ll begin to work our plan.

I don’t
know that we will have the momentous occasion like Neil Armstrong did when we
realize that we “have arrived.”  But I do
know that if we don’t make changes, NAA will end up like the associations for
buggy whip manufacturers or travel agents.

And the
other thing I know is that it will take all of us to make NAA successful.

President
Kennedy put it best…” in a very real sense, it will not be one man going to
the moon–if we make this judgment affirmatively, it will be an entire nation.
For all of us must work to put him there.”
